The CAVCON Modular Building System comprises walls of cavity construction, formed by factory produced prestressed concrete posts and precast reinforced concrete wall panels, external walls being 103 mm thick and internal walls 86 mm thick, overall.

The posts are set in situ bases and the wall panels rest on precast concrete plinths spanning between the posts.

Window cills, reveals and lintels are of precast concrete as are door thresholds and lintels.

Floor slabs are of in situ concrete and the roof construction, floor coverings, ceilings and other finishings and services are all conventional.

The system has been developed to suit the future construction needs of Southern Africa in the area of low to medium cost multi-purpose buildings.

Research has proved that some of the more critical factors in building construction, affecting growth in the industry and contributing to the spiraling costs of construction are:
   • shortage and cost of skilled labour
   • shortage and cost of building components
   • the use of specialised equipment.
